Family Medicine & Washington CME Requirements

  • American Board of Family Medicine

      • At a Glance

      • 150 Category 1 CME hours every 3 years
      • 50 SAM Points every 3 years
      • By the end of year 10

        • 1 ABFM MC-FP Examination

      The American Board of Family Medicine requires that 150 hours of Category 1 CME hours every 3 years, starting with Physicians last certified 2011 and beyond. CME can be accumulated on an ongoing basis during each 3 year stage in the continuous MC-FP process. CME credits must be submitted/verified by the 3 year stage deadlines.

      Physicians last certified 2003-2010 will be required to submit 300 hours of acceptable CME accumulated during the six (6) calendar years prior to the examination year. CME credits must be submitted/verified by the published deadline for completing all application components

  • Washington State Medical Quality Assurance Commission

        200 total hours every 4 years

      • Maximum of 80 Category 2 Credits.
      • Maximum of 80 Category 3 Credits.
      • Maximum of 80 Category 4 Credits.

      The Washington State Medical Quality Assurance Commission requires 200 Category 1 CME hours every 4 years. Of these, a maximum of 80 hours may be Category 2, a maximum of 80 may be earned for serving as an instructor of medical students (Category 3, and a maximum of 80 may be earned through papers, publications, books, or exhibits (Category 4). The commission will also accept certification or recertification by a specialty board as the equivalent of two hundred hours of continuing medical education.

      The Washington State Board of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery requires 150 CME credits every 3 years, of which a minimum of 60 must be Category 1-A credits.
