Emergency Medicine & Vermont CME Requirements
American Board of Emergency Medicine ⇱

25 total hours every 1 years
The American Board of Emergency Medicine requires an average of 25 AMA PRA Category 1 hours every year. These hours must all be related to the physician's field of practice, and a minimum of 8 must be self assessment activities. AAFP Prescribed Credit, ACOG cognates, and AOA Category 1-A Credits are considered equivalent to AMA PRA Category 1 credits. Since the ABEM only requires an average of 25 credits per year, credits may roll over indefinitely (ie, earning 50 credits in a single year will satisfy CME requirements for the next two years). Despite this, the ABEM encourages annual participation in CME.

30 total hours every 2 years
Every two years, the Vermont Board of Medical Practice requires 30 AMA PRA Category 1 hours. Of these hours, 1 must be in hospice, palliative care, or pain management. Due to the passage of Act 173, beginning with license renewals due Nov. 2018, all physicians with a DEA number, pending application for a DEA number, or who dispense controlled substances will be required to show they have completed a total of at least 2 hours over the course of the previous 2-year licensing cycle - rather than the current one hour - of continuing education on the topic of prescribing controlled substances.
