Surgery & South Carolina CME Requirements

  • American Board of Surgery

      • At a Glance

      • Ongoing participation in Quality Assessment Programs.
      • By the end of year 3

        • 90 Category 1 CME hours (min. 60 self assessment hours)
      • By the end of year 6

        • 90 Category 1 CME hours (min. 60 self assessment hours)
      • By the end of year 9

        • 90 Category 1 CME hours (min. 60 self assessment hours)
      • By the end of year 10

        • MOC Exam (years 8-10 only)

      The American Board of Surgery requires 90 Category 1 CME hours every 3 years.
      Of these hours, all must be on a subject relevant to the physician's practice and a minimum of 60 must be self-assessment activities, with a minimum score of 75%.
      Achieving certification or recertification wtih the ABS will automatically waive 60 credits of the self-assessment CME requirement.

  • South Carolina Board of Medical Examiners

      • At a Glance

        40 total hours every 2 years

      • 40 AMA or AOA Category 1 CME.
      • 2 Approved Procedures of Prescribing and Monitoring Controlled Substances.
      • 30 Practice-Relevant CME.

      The South Carolina Board of Medical Examiners requires 40 AMA, AOA, or other board-approved organization Category 1 hours. Of these hours, a minimum of 30 must be on a subject directly related to the licensee's practice area, and a minimum of 2 hours must be on the subject of approved procedures of prescribing and monitoring controlled substances.
