150 total hours every 5 years
The American Board of Surgery requires 150 Category 1 CME hours every 5 years. Of these hours, all must be on a subject relevant to the physician's practice and a minimum of 50 must be self-assessment activities, with a minimum score of 75%. This requirement will change to 125 CME credits with no self-assessment required when diplomates pass their first Continuous Certification Assessment (see below); the ABS will also waive 60 credits of CME with self-assessment for passing a secure exam, such as the Qualifying Examination in an ABS specialty. The Continuous Certification Assessment is required every other year; grace year may be granted.

The South Carolina Board of Medical Examiners requires 40 AMA, AOA, or other board-approved organization Category 1 hours. Of these hours, a minimum of 30 must be on a subject directly related to the licensee's practice area, and a minimum of 2 hours must be on the subject of approved procedures of prescribing and monitoring controlled substances.
