Surgery & Oregon CME Requirements

  • American Board of Surgery

      • At a Glance

      • Ongoing participation in Quality Assessment Programs.
      • Continuous Certification Assessment (required every other year)
      • By the end of year 5

        • 150 Category 1 CME hours (min. 50 self-assessment hours)
      • By the end of year 10

        • 150 Category 1 CME hours (min. 50 self-assessment hours)
      • By the end of year 15

        • 150 Category 1 CME hours (min. 50 self-assessment hours)

      The American Board of Surgery requires 150 Category 1 CME hours every 5 years.
      Of these hours, all must be on a subject relevant to the physician's practice and a minimum of 50 must be self-assessment activities, with a minimum score of 75%.
      This requirement will change to 125 CME credits with no self-assessment required when diplomates pass their first Continuous Certification Assessment (see below); the ABS will also waive 60 credits of CME with self-assessment for passing a secure exam, such as the Qualifying Examination in an ABS specialty. The Continuous Certification Assessment is required every other year; grace year may be granted.

      • At a Glance

        60 total hours every 2 years

      • 60 AMA, AOA, APMA or AAPA Category 1 Credits.
      • 6 Pain Management And/Or Treatment of the Terminally Ill.

      The Oregon Medical Board requires 60 AMA, AOA, APMA, or AAPA Category 1 hours.
      Of these hours, a minimum of 6 must be on the topics of pain management specific and/or the care and treatment of the terminally ill.
