150 total hours every 5 years
The American Board of Surgery requires 150 Category 1 CME hours every 5 years. Of these hours, all must be on a subject relevant to the physician's practice and a minimum of 50 must be self-assessment activities, with a minimum score of 75%. This requirement will change to 125 CME credits with no self-assessment required when diplomates pass their first Continuous Certification Assessment (see below); the ABS will also waive 60 credits of CME with self-assessment for passing a secure exam, such as the Qualifying Examination in an ABS specialty. The Continuous Certification Assessment is required every other year; grace year may be granted.
