Neurology & California CME Requirements
- Continuous average of 90 Category 1 Credits over the 3 previous years (minimum 24 self-assessment credits)
By the end of year 10
- MOC Exam

At a Glance
The American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology requires 90 CME hours every 3 years. These hours must be relevant to the physician's specialty and/or sub-specialty and can include ACCME Category 1 credits, AOA Category 1-A credits, and/or Category 1 credits accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
Of these hours, a minimum of 24 hours must be self-assessed activities selected from the ABPN's Product list.
NEW in February 2016: Diplomates now choose ONE Clinical Module OR Feedback Module activity to complete the PIP (Improvement in Medical Practice Unit).
- 12 CME hours on Pain Management And Appropriate Treatment of the Terminally Ill (One-time requirement).
- 10 hours of Geriatric Care are required for General Internists and physicians with 25% or more of patients over the age of 65.

50 total hours every 2 years
The Medical Board of California requires 50 CME hours every two years. The renewal period ends on the last day of the physician's birth month, every 2 years.
Additionally, the Medical Board of California has a one-time requirement of 12 CME hours on pain management and the appropriate care and treatment of the terminally ill. Pathologists and Radiologists are exempt.
The 12 hours may be any combination of pain management credits and appropriate care and treatment of the terminally credits. These hours may count towards the 50 hours for the current renewal cycle and must be completed by the physician's second license renewal date or within four years, whichever comes first.

100 total hours every 2 years
The Osteopathic Medical Board of California requires 100 hours of AMA Category 1 or AOA Category 1 or 2 CME. During this time, a minimum of forty (40) hours of the 100 hours must be American Osteopathic Association (AOA) Category 1A or 1B, and a maximum of 60 hours of Category 2A or 2B CME.

Prepare for the ABA and ABPM Pain Medicine Exams while completing 45 Pain Medicine specific Category 1 CME credits.
