Anesthesiology & California CME Requirements

      • At a Glance

      • Complete 30 MOCA Minute questions per calendar quarter
      • By the end of year 5

        • Complete 25 IMP (Improvement in Medical Practice) points
      • By the end of year 10

        • 250 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits
        • 20 Patient Safety CME Hours
        • Complete an Additional 25 IMP (Improvement in Medical Practice) Points

      The American Board of Anesthesiology requires 250 AMA PRA Category 1 hours every 10 years. Self Assessment CMEs are no longer required. 20 of the mandated 250 Category 1 CME must be ABA-approved Patient Safety CMEs. Importantly, no more than 70 credits per calendar year will be applied to the 250 hour requirement.

      Also, as of 2016, the MOCA Minute will be offered instead of the 10 year examination. The new requirement includes successfully completing 30 questions per calendar quarter. Learners must also complete 25 Points in Years 1-5 and 25 Points in Years 6-10.

      • 12 CME hours on Pain Management And Appropriate Treatment of the Terminally Ill (One-time requirement)
      • 10 hours of Geriatric Care are required for General Internists and physicians with 25% or more of patients over the age of 65.

      The Medical Board of California requires 50 CME hours every two years.
      Additionally, the Medical Board of California has a one-time requirement of 12 CME hours on pain management and the appropriate care and treatment of the terminally ill. The 12 hours may be any combination of pain management credits and appropriate care and treatement of the terminally credits. These hours may count towards the 50 hours for the current renewal cycle, and must be completed by the physician's second license renewal date or within four years, whichever comes first.

        150 total hours every 3 years

      • 60 AOA 1-A or 1-B
      • 12 Pain Management And/Or Treatment of the Terminally Ill (One time requirement)

      The Osteopathic Medical Board of California requires 150 hours of DO CME every three years. During this time, a minimum of 60 credits must be AOA 1-A or AOA 1-B, and only a maximum of 90 credits may be category 2A or 3A.
      Additionally, the Osteopathic Medical Board of California has a one-time requirement of 12 CME hours on pain management and the appropriate care and treatment of the terminally ill. The 12 hours may be any combination of pain management credits and appropriate care and treatement of the terminally credits. These hours may count towards the 50 hours for the current renewal cycle, and must be completed by the physician's second license renewal date or within four years, whichever comes first.
