About the ABU Qualifying (Part 1) Exam
As outlined by the American Board of Urology, the purpose of the examination is to evaluate whether the candidate can demonstrate a minimum level of knowledge necessary for the safe practice of urology.
What is tested on the ABU Qualifying (Part 1) Exam?
According to the American Board of Urology Exam Content Outline, the Qualifying (Part 1) Exam tests on the following four subject-oriented task forces:
- Core Urologic Knowledge: 20%
- Basic Science- Must have a Clinical Correlation: 5%
- Upper and Lower Tract Urinary Obstruction: 10%
- Urolithiasis: 10%+ Core
- Oncology: 25%+ Core
- Andrology: Impotence and Infertility: 8%
- Female Pelvic Medicine Includes Management of Neurogenic Bladder: 12%
- Pediatric Urology: 10%
How long is the ABU Qualifying (Part 1) Exam?
The Urology Qualifying Exam is made up of 300 multiple-choice questions (MCQ), of which 100 are new field-test questions and will not count toward your final grade.
It is a one day, computer-based exam divided into two sections, each lasting 3 hours.
Urology Board Review Tips

Note that these categories can be taken one at a time or in combination to create a custom exam. For the most realistic exam experience, users should set the BoardVitals timer to 60 seconds per question as the real exam requires 50 questions to be answered in an hour (a little more than a minute per question).
According to the ABU, this exam has a pass rate of approximately 90% for first-time examinees.
