Information about the ABR Certifying Examination

The Certifying exam is an image-rich and computer-administered exam that emphasizes synthesis of information, differential diagnosis, and patient management.

What is covered on the Radiology Certifying Exam?

The ABR Cerifying Exam consists of four modules:

Essentials of Diagnostic Radiology

This is a required module and it covers basic knowledge that every radiologist should know (for example, recognizing child abuse, pneumothorax, shock bowel, and subdural hematoma). The ABR provides a study guide for the Essentials of Diagnostic Radiology.

Clinical Practice Area Modules

These modules are selected by the candidate based on training, experience, and practice emphasis. Candidates may select any three areas.

The clinical practice areas are:

  • General radiology
  • Breast
  • Cardiac
  • Gastrointestinal
  • Musculoskeletal
  • Neuroradiology
  • Nuclear
  • Pediatric
  • Thoracic
  • Ultrasound
  • Genitourinary
  • Vascular and interventional radiology

Noninterpretive Skills (NIS) Content

All clinical category modules will contain Noninterpretive Skills content which are general topics of importance to the practice of radiology, such as recognition and managment of contrast reactions, error prevention, communication skills, professionalism, ethics, and other aspects of practice.

The ABR provides a syllabus called the Noninterpretive Skills Domain Specification and Resource Guide
