The American Board of Otolaryngology requires 25 AMA Category 1 CME credits every year. Of these hours, a minimum of 60% must be on the subject of Otolaryngology. Learners must complete a computer based exam in the last three years of each 10-year recertification cycle. Learners must also complete Improvement in Medical Practice Activities including a patient survey, a peer survey, and participate in a registry that will be the basis for quality improvement activities.

Of these hours, a minimum of 30 must be on a subject directly related to the licensee's practice area, and a minimum of 2 hours must be on the subject of approved procedures of prescribing and monitoring controlled substances.
