About the PANRE Board Review Exam
As part of the NCCPA’s certification maintenance process, PA-C designees must pass the Physician Assistant National Recertifying Exam (PANRE) by the end of the tenth year of their certification maintenance cycle. The PANRE is designed to assess basic medical and surgical knowledge.

What content is covered on the PANRE Exam blueprint?
According to the NCCPA Content Blueprint for the PANRE, the following topics are covered:
- Cardiovascular System 13%
- Dermatologic System 6%
- Endocrine System 6%
- Eyes, Ears, Nose, and Throat 8%
- Gastrointestinal System/Nutrition 11%
- Genitourinary System 5%
- Hematologic System 4%
- Infectious Diseases 6%
- Musculoskeletal System 9%
- Neurologic System 7%
- Psychiatry/Behavioral Science 5%
- Pulmonary System 10%
- Renal System 3%
- Reproductive System 7%
In addition to these categories, up to 2% of the exam questions may cover professional practice (legal and ethical) issues. The percent allocation may vary slightly with each exam.
How many questions are on the PANRE Exam?
The PANRE is a four-hour exam made up of 240 multiple choice questions spread out over four sections of 60 items with 60 minutes to complete each section.
PANRE Exam Tip
With the way the exam is configured, examinees are allotted a total of 45 minutes of break time so you can take breaks between the sections (and we highly suggest taking a break in between). The examinee will be responsible for managing their own break time.
