American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology

At a Glance

Continuous average of 90 Category 1 Credits over the 3 previous years (minimum 24 self-assessment credits)

MOC Exam

Diplomates in the 10-Year MOC program must complete 300 Category 1 CME credits (includes SA-CME) prior to applying for recertification. • Diplomates in the CC/MOC program must complete an average of 30 specialty and/or subspecialty CME credits per year. • CME can be ANY Category 1 credits relevant to one’s field of practice. • Diplomates choose their own CME activities. CME activities do not need to be ABPN approved. • Self-Assessment (SA-CME) credits contribute to the overall number of CME credits. • CME activities completed for one specialty/subspecialty will satisfy the requirement for another specialty/subspecialty.

Osteopathic Medical Board of California

100 total hours every 2 years

40 AOA Category 1-A or 1-B CME.
12 Pain Management And/Or Treatment of the Terminally Ill (One time requirement).

The Osteopathic Medical Board of California requires 100 hours of AMA Category 1 or AOA Category 1 or 2 CME. During this time, a minimum of forty (40) hours of the 100 hours must be American Osteopathic Association (AOA) Category 1A or 1B, and a maximum of 60 hours of Category 2A or 2B CME. Additionally, the Osteopathic Medical Board of California has a one-time requirement of 12 CME hours on pain management and the appropriate care and treatment of the terminally ill. The 12 hours may be any combination of pain management credits and appropriate care and treatment of the terminally credits. These hours may count towards the 50 hours for the current renewal cycle and must be completed by the physician's second license renewal date or within four years, whichever comes first. Pathology and Radiology specialists are exempt.

10 hours of Geriatric Care are required for General Internists and physicians with 25% or more of patients over the age of 65.

The Medical Board of California requires 50 CME hours every two years. The renewal period ends on the last day of the physician's birth month, every 2 years. Additionally, the Medical Board of California has a one-time requirement of 12 CME hours on pain management and the appropriate care and treatment of the terminally ill. Pathologists and Radiologists are exempt. The 12 hours may be any combination of pain management credits and appropriate care and treatment of the terminally credits. These hours may count towards the 50 hours for the current renewal cycle and must be completed by the physician's second license renewal date or within four years, whichever comes first.
