doctor testimonial

“Not only was I able to get a feel for the real APMLE Part 1 exam, but I also learned a lot from the detailed explanation of the questions I got wrong. The interface allows you to track your progress as you study with a detailed report, giving you insight on your strengths and weaknesses. Since BoardVitals was so vital in helping me pass the APMLE Part 1 exam, I decided to use their APMLE Part 2 question bank as my main practice resource for Boards. This program is priceless. ”

How long is the APMLE Part 1 Exam?

The APMLE Part 1 Exam is comprised of 205 questions in four-option multiple choice format. Test-takers are allotted four hours to complete the exam.

Tips and Tricks on the APMLE Part 1 Exam

The APMLE Part 1 is a fairly difficult exam with an estimated first time test taker pass rate of 85% (Data taken across several randomly selected institutions), lower than the national average for many of the medical specialties. The scale passing score has been set by the NBPME at 75.

The Part 1 exam is 205 podiatry questions, and it’s best to make an educated guess if you don’t know the correct answer as there are no points for unanswered questions. Make sure you submit an answer for each question. Students can also take APMLE practice tests here.

Study Strategy

Particular emphasis should be be placed on the following categories in this order during a student’s study session:

  • Lower limb
  • Pharmacology
  • Microbiology
  • Physiology

Historically, we have found that there is a strong and statistically significant correlation between the number of practice questions that a student takes (particularly key topics) and their Part 1 pass rate. We suggest at least three months of preparation time and going through all of the questions at least twice, and reading the explanations. Even if a student gets the question correct, it’s important to read through the rationale and understand the teaching points that are included with each question.

Given the way that the exam is graded, it is important for students to know how they compare to the national average before going into the exam. BoardVitals provides a comparison basis on each question, as well as on each category so that students can ensure that they are in the range of passing the exam. We also suggest the next best question for each student individually based on previous performance.
