The ease of completing the practice questions online at your convenience is one of the strengths of the resource. About the NBDE Part 2 Exam

As outlined by the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (JCNDE), the purpose of the NBDE Part I and Part II exams is to assess the ability to understand important information from the biomedical and dental sciences, and the ability to apply such information in a problem-solving context.

What content will be tested on the NBDE Part 2 Exam?

According to the NBDE Part 2 Guide, the following categories are tested:

There are two parts to the NBDE Part 2 Exam: The discipline-based component (400 items), and the case-based component (100 questions).

Discipline-Based Component

  1. Endodontics
  2. Operative Dentistry
  3. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery/Pain Control
  4. Oral Diagnosis
  5. Orthodontics/Pediatric Dentistry
  6. Patient Management
  7. Periodontics
  8. Pharmacology
  9. Prosthodontics

Case-Based Component

This component deals with actual patient cases. They are made up of the following approximate distribution: * adult patients (70%) * child patients (30%)

A minimum of 15% of Case-Based Component exam questions will address the medical management of compromised adults and children. A compromised patient is defined as a person whose health status requires modification of standard treatment.

Each case presentation includes:

  1. synopsis of a patient's health and social histories
  2. patient dental charting
  3. diagnostic radiographs
  4. clinical photographs of the patient (when necessary)

Tips and Advice for the NBDE II Exam:

Of the two component on the exam, the case-based component is a little easier based on student interviews that we conducted. There are several areas that are worth spending some additional time on before heading into the cases: Radiology Images, Prophylactic Regimens, Pathology Pictures, and Medically Compromised Cases (such as diabetes). Commit the eruption sequences to memory. Keep in mind that pain management cases are also fair game.
