“BoardVitals is a great adjunct to your study materials when preparing for the NBDE II. The questions help to prepare you well for the exam and cover a wide variety of important topics. The ease of completing the practice questions online at your convenience is one of the strengths of the resource. In addition, the detailed answer explanations help to review the important concepts and take away points from the question. I highly recommend it!”

Tips and Advice for the NBDE II Exam:

There are two parts to the dental exam, the discipline-based component (400 items), and the case-based component (100 questions).

The case based component is a little easier based on student interviews that we conducted. There are several areas that are worth spending some additional time on before heading into the cases: Radiology Images, Prophylactic Regimens, Pathology Pictures, and Medically Compromised Cases (such as diabetes). Commit the eruption sequences to memory. Keep in mind that pain management cases are also fair game. Each case presentation includes: synopsis of patient health, dental charts, radiographs, and clinical photos (sometimes).

The 800 dental questions are derived from the following categories:

  • Endodontics
  • Operative Dentistry
  • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery / Pain Control
  • Oral Diagnosis
  • Orthodontics / Pediatric Dentistry
  • Patient Management
  • Periodontics
  • Pharmacology
  • Prosthodontics
